The Tändlergasse and the AltstadtQuartier Regensburg – A 700 year old love story

This district of houses around the Regensburg Old Town Quarter, which is so typical of Regensburg, appears in the sources as early as 1279 with the name “inter utensila” (= among everyday objects). The name “unter den Chramen” (Kramer, general merchant) was first documented in 1359, and the name “Chramgasse” has been recorded since 1529. In 1613 the “Tandelmarkt” appears in the chronicle, where the Tändler, the old goods dealers, were present.

The used goods trade was much more important in earlier times than it is today. People mostly traded in shoes and clothing. Old shoemakers mended worn shoes for sale at the market, and sewn together old clothes were exported from Tändlergasse to Hungary.

Small shops have been at home in this heart of the medieval city for centuries and as you walk through the narrow streets you will notice that small shops still have their place. Even if it is no longer old goods that are offered, but rather exclusive special features. Such as the chess shop or the antique shop, which are part of the AltstadtQuartier Regensburg.
