The secret of the cat

The walls of the Hotel Münchner Hof in the old town district of Regensburg date back to the year 1300 and hide many secrets.

Such a secret was discovered during renovation work in the hotel lobby. While they were removing a wooden ceiling, a cat suddenly looked at the construction worker – a mummified cat!
This is how an old custom emerged from long ago into modern times. Since the Neolithic, living creatures have been built in to protect houses. Cats were intended as a defense against witches, burglaries and fires and so the poor animals were walled up alive.

Today the cat has a place of honor in the Munich courtyard. It was buried behind glass just a few meters from where it was found and can now be viewed by hotel guests.

By the way, it wasn’t the only cat that was found. A mummified cat was also discovered during the renovation work on the Blauer Turm branch, but it was walled up again. The hotel owner, Ms. Fuchshuber, said: “We know where she is.” During tours of the house, she stops in front of the site and tells the story of the protective spell against witches. “What good was it? Nothing. The Münchner Hof has been run exclusively by women for years. Then everyone laughs.”
